                                                                around You

Welcome to the Museum of the Missouri Institute of Natural Science in Springfield, MO!  We are delighted that you’ve chosen to be with us and we invite you to join us for an exciting trip into the Natural World around us.  Meet us at the Museum and journey back into the distant past when Missouri was still under nearly 500 feet of water under a giant inland sea and learn about the life forms native to our region and the world at that time.

The Museum and Institute are located on the Riverbluff Cave site, probably the oldest Ice Age cave in North America, and a continuing source of rich fossil finds of mammoths and other animals.

Entrance to the Museum is free, and we are registered as a Non-profit entity here in Missouri.  We greatly appreciate your donations, which are used to fund our operations.  Take your time and browse our website.  Then come down and meet us at the Museum!  We are sure you’ll find a variety of fun, educational and exciting things to learn, see and do for visitors of all ages. We look forward to seeing you at the Museum soon!

          Sincerely,

The Staff at the Museum of the Missouri Institute of Natural Science

FEATURED FOSSIL FROM THE MUSEUM SHOP!

The Museum Shop has just received a unique ammonite fossil!  It is medium sized, approximately 6", polished on one side to clearly reveal the sutures.  Sutures are formed where the walls or septa of the ammonite's internal chambers join with the outer shell.  It is thought that the intricate suture design provides tremendous strength to the shell, to allow it to dive to deeper depths in the ocean.  The reverse side of the ammonite has not been polished, to allow the natural sheen of the shell to show through.  The Museum Shop has only one specimen in stock.  Makes an excellent gift for the naturalist in your family or circle of friends!  Come and get it before this beautiful one-of-a-kind fossil is gone!  Price: $100.
