Fossil Preparation
Fossil Preparation
Finding a fossil is only the first step in collecting fossils. Once the fossil is found, it is extracted from the surrounding dirt (matrix), wrapped in plaster for protection, and brought back to the laboratory for further preparation.
Find out how a fossil is actually prepped by a paleontologist in the Activity Center. Watch as they work on a real fossil to remove the matrix and expose the fossil. Learn about the tools and methods used to clean and expose fossils. Learn how to distinguish between the fossil and the surrounding waste material. Get first-hand information about how paleontologists clean fossils. Call the Museum and ask how you can schedule a Fossil Preparation demonstration for free for your group of 10 or more on your next visit!
