Riverbluff Cave

America's Portal on the Pleistocene

Fossilized MillipedeAlmost from the moment of its discovery on September 11, 2001, the Riverbluff Cave site has yielded a treasure trove of significant scientific discoveries.  The oldest date in the cave so far is 1.08 million years old, with several feet of sediment below that mark still waiting to be dated.  The cave contains a variety of formations, as well as numerous claw marks and track ways, bear beds and coprolites.  Giant Short-faced Bear ClawmarksThe fossilized remains of many different mammals, reptiles, fish and birds have been found at various locations along the walls and floor of the almost 2,000 foot passageway.  Carbon dating has revealed that the cave became sealed more than 55,000 years ago, which led to the site’s acquisition of the moniker “The Ice Age Time Capsule.”  Work in the cave has progressed at a steady pace since the date of discovery, and generations of researchers will continue to uncover the cave’s secrets well into the future.  Click on the picture of the claw marks to go to Riverbluff Cave's official website.
